Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club Sponsorship Program

From its inception in 1975, Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club has provided financial assistance to worthy non-profit charities and causes in and around Colorado Springs.  With rare exception, our sponsorship grants are awarded to organizations and programs that deliver services locally.   Listed below are those to whom Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club has awarded grants in the past two years:

Speech & Hearing-Our First Priority

• HEARS -  Short for “Hearing Education and Assistance by Rocky Mountain Sertomans”, this program is operated and funded by local Sertoma clubs.  It arranges and pays for diagnostic services and hearing aids for those who cannot otherwise afford them.   HEARS paid for over a quarter-million dollars in services and devices last year.

• HEARS 5K Walk/Run.  We provide “seed money” each year to pay facility rental and equipment costs for this HEARS fundraiser.

• Center For Hearing, Speech & Language.  This local office of a Denver-based charity has supported Sertoma’s HEARS program for many years with highly discounted diagnostic services and hearing aids.

• Hearing Loss Association of Colorado (Colorado Springs Chapter).  Conducts advocacy programs for those with hearing problems.

• Aspen Camp.  A Sertoma funded camp in the Rockies for deaf and hearing impaired children.

• Sertoma Annual Fund.  Sertoma Headquarters in Kansas City sponsors several national initiatives, often in partnership with other Hearing and Speech charities, to fund education, research, diagnostic services, assistive equipment and scholarships for the hearing impaired.

Freedom & Democracy/National Heritage

• Freedom Essay Contest.  Along with other clubs, each year Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club organizes and sponsors an essay contest among local middle-school students.  They write on the patriotic theme “What Freedom Means To Me.”  In addition to receiving a financial and other awards from Wooden Valley, contest winners and their families are recognized at a banquet hosted by the Pikes Peak District of Sertoma.

• Girls State.   Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club funds half the tuition for a local high school junior to attend this week-long, in-residence civics program and  state government simulation at a college campus.  The program is run by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Youth

•  Al Kaly Shrine Transport Fund.  This program provides local children and their parents free transport to Shrine hospitals across the nation for medical evaluation, surgery, treatment and rehabilitation. 

• Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) For Children.  CASA of the Pikes Peak Region trains and supervises volunteers to represent the best interests of victims of child abuse, neglect and severe domestic conflict. Judges appoint volunteers to be a voice for these children in court and the community. 

• Teen Court.  This independent, non-profit program provides an alternative to the regular Municipal Court sentencing for first-time misdemeanor offenses committed by youth 10 to 18 years of age. 

• Urban Peak.  A shelter that provides temporary housing, meals and counseling for local troubled youth between the ages of 15 and 21. 

• Soap Box Derby.  An annual summer competition sponsored by Sertoma clubs and local businesses gives girls and boys the opportunity to build and race soap box cars. 

• Boy Scout Troop 66.  Equipment for camping trips.

Service To Mankind

•  Silver Key.  For 40 years, Woodmen Valley Sertoma Club has financially supported various transportation, feeding and home services programs for senior citizens. 

• TESSA Safe House.  A safe house for local women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse. 

• Friends Of The Civic Auditorium.  A foundation dedicated to preserving and restoring the Colorado Springs Civic Auditorium. 

• Colorado Springs Independence Center.  Coordinates social services for the disabled and less fortunate in our community. 

• Marion House Catholic Charities.  Provides shelter, food, guidance and other social services to the homeless and disadvantaged in Colorado Springs.
  
  
• Care & Share.  Colorado Springs’ largest charity distributor of food to individuals and families with financial hardship. 

• Humane Society Of Pikes Peak.  Taking care of and finding homes for domestic animals in our community.
  
  
• Gazette Empty Stocking Fund.  This holiday fund raiser supports many worthy charities in the community. 

• Brain Tumor Society.  The Colorado programs of the national organization supporting medical research and advocating for individuals with brain tumors. 

• Alzheimer’s Association.   The programs of the local chapter providing help to individuals and families affected by this degenerative disease.
